Grace is defined God‘s unmerited favor towards those that don’t deserve His favor. In other words, God loves you no matter what you have done and that includes rejecting Him and His free gift of salvation. His desire is to bless you at all times. However, When you and I try and live outside of His will it is impossible for God to give us everything he desires.
Mercy is God withholding from you and I the punishment we deserve for the way we have treated Him. As we believe in God and His son Jesus, God grants us mercy from the punishment because Jesus took that punishment for us. Because Jesus went to the cross and overcame sin when he never sinned himself on this earth. When you and I believe in God and Jesus we are granted God’s wonderful grace (unmerited favor which means we cannot earn it) and His gracious mercy.
These scriptures found in the book of Romans are referred to as the “Romans Road”. These scriptures tell us the following:
- Who we are (sinners)
- What God has done for us (sent His son)
- What we must do to be saved (believe and accept His free gift of salvation)
- The result of such action (forgiveness and freedom),
- and encouragement to live it out.
Romans 3:23 – “23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”
Romans 6:23 – “23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Romans 5:8 – “8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 10:9 – “9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
Romans 10:13 – “13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
Romans 5:1 – “1 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:”
Romans 8:1-2 – “1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you[a] free from the law of sin and death.”
